House of Lords Peer to support Suffolk Coastal Green Party as they field two candidates in the Aldeburgh and Leiston By-election

Green Party Peer Baroness Jenny Jones is to put weight behind the campaign on Saturday 19th Junewhen she will join forces with candidates Tom Daly and Matt Oakley. The Green Party will contest two seats on East Suffolk Council in Aldeburgh and Leiston in the by-election being held on 8th July.

Candidate Tom Daly said “Its time us Greens stood up for our communities in  the Aldeburgh and Leiston area who are worried about the twin threats of Sizewell C and the Friston Scottish Power substation.  Of course as Greens we are pro wind power generation but dumping a huge substation on the edge of Friston is not the way to go with this."

Candidate Matt Oakley said "as a resident of Leiston and local football coach I want to represent my community and believe we Greens have some good solutions to help with the social as well as the environmental problems we face which are of course interlinked.  Many of us who live here are extremely concerned about the threat of Sizewell C to our AONB and vulnerable coast as well as to tourist businesses."

  1. I have read your campaign literature and note with interest your position with regard to the siting of an electricity substation in Friston.
Do you have an alternative proposal? This is only one of several such facilities that will be needed in the near future, with at least one more off-shore wind farm due for completion. There is already one substation beside Sizewell power station, which serves the Galloper field. Is it beyond the ingenuity of our engineers to combine all these streams onto one site, thereby reducing the impact on the community and the infrastructure and, of course, the natural habitat?
I look forward to receiving your reply before the election on the 8th July
    Gillian

    1. We think Scottish Power should look at alternative locations for bringing power on shore such as an existing industrial site or via a ring main such as adopted by Denmark and Germany.
